Everyone who knows about Jim Carrey is entertained by his
own brand of comedy, which involves energetic slapstick performances which has
made him one of the greatest comedians and the biggest movie star in Hollywood.
Recently Jim Carrey delivered commencement speech at the Iowa’s Maharishi
University. It was here that Jim Carrey dropped his wacky and comical persona
for a while and gave the university’s college graduates some practical advice
in pursuing their dreams.
Jim Carrey talks about choosing one’s path in their life.
For Jim Carrey a person chooses out of fear or love. A person who chooses out
of fear is basically not willing to
pursue his/her goals since it is a “practical” thing to do when in reality
he/she does not to go out of the comfort zone and reach for the dream that is
far away. Jim Carrey implores the college graduates to choose what they really
want and love. They can succeed or fail in attaining that dream, but at least
they did try to reach that goal willingly.
The college graduates also got to hear a personal and
sentimental tale from Jim Carrey. He recounts how his father could have been
have been a great comedian just like him, but unfortunately his father did not
believe that it was possible for him to a great comedian. And so his father
made a "conservative choice" instead and chose to become an
accountant since it was a “safe job” that had little risk for him. At the age
of 12 however, Jim Carrey’s father lost his job and as well as everything they
had. The entire family was forced to live out their lives in a van. Jim Carrey
emphasizes this point; this is one of the many lessons he learned from his
father that the least a person can do is to fail at what that person didn't
want. If that is the case, then a person should take the chance on failing to
succeed at what that person really wants.
This comedic actor is right about taking a chance in
pursuing one’s dream regardless of failing or succeeding in that dream. Jim
Carrey himself knows what it like is to struggle in reaching for a dream. He
never even finished high school since he had to help his family survive their
economic hardships. Early on in his
career as a comedian, he experienced many setbacks which almost made him doubt
his talents as an entertainer. With perseverance Jim Carrey gradually build up
his reputation as an entertainer. He would later move on from stand-up comedy
to film and television such In Living Color a sketch comedy show. It would be
his lead role in the Ace Venture: Pet Detective that Jim Carrey’s star would
rise to fame. He later would have lead roles in many more films with more
success as well awards and nominations for his work.
To hear such practical and solid advice on life form Jim
Carrey is quite unexpected since everyone is more familiar with his wacky and
funny persona as an actor comedian. He was right in saying that it is more
important to reach for one’s dream even if failure was the result because at
least that person strive to reach what he/she really wanted on their own free
will.
